The Mills & Reeve family team is highly specialised and we pride ourselves on being experts at what we do. Charges for family work are incurred at an hourly rate for each solicitor involved in your case. These hourly rates are set annually and are dependent upon the level of expertise of the individual solicitor. Hours are broken down into units of six minutes, ie, 1/10th of an hour, for charging purposes. Time spent working on all aspects of your case is charged. This includes taking and making phone calls, dealing with and writing correspondence, drafting and considering, as well as time spent in meetings and at court.
It is very difficult to give an estimate of how much it will cost to finalise a divorce and financial settlement for you, as it depends on factors such as complexity of the assets involved, whether there are children, whether there are disagreements about the children, and how cooperative your spouse will be. We will, however, be able to give you an estimate of the scale of fees you are likely to encounter when we are acquainted with your circumstances. We will also keep you updated should anything happen to mean that an estimate has to be revised.
We ask our clients to give us a cheque for £1,000 on account of fees as they instruct us to act in divorce and financial proceedings. This will be set off against a first fee note, but we aim to keep that level of fees on account throughout the duration of the case, and more will be required in the run-up to any important court hearings.
We do promise that our aim is to keep your fees to a minimum, by taking as much heat as we can out of the proceedings and litigating only where necessary. As a gesture of our goodwill in this regard, we offer you Divorce.co.uk – a wealth of information, for you, for free!
